How do you become a Warren Miller ski star? The king of hill thrill sold his company in 1984, but his name and reputation live on in extreme moviemaking. Ski-star wannabes will flock to Vail Mountain this week through April 16 to try pond-skimming, right, and other stunts that could land them a nanosecond spot in an upcoming Miller flick. “I never thought it would turn into such a career,” says Miller alum Chris Anthony, 37, who at 21 was a college student facing final exams when he duked it out with Mike Farny at a ski competition at Vail. Farny had just returned from a Miller shoot in Antarctica and invited Anthony to come along on the next one in France. Anthony begged his professors to postpone the tests and they did -- except for his sports psychology teacher. “He failed me and said my priorities were out of line,” Anthony recalls. Die-hard skiers who aren’t studying for exams over spring break -- and aren’t easily embarrassed -- can take a shot at becoming the next Anthony in the Look Ma’s Rockin’ Relay on Saturday. Four-member teams square off in oddball events such as rocketing downhill on an inflatable air sled, sprinting up and down the mountain with a tray of cups and cycling the course on a ski bike. “We do push new people through the ranks,” Max Bevy, director for Warren Miller Entertainment, says of those who make the cut. “You have to be an amazingly good skier.” Go to www.springbacktovail.com.
