Residents of about 500 San Bernardino homes evacuated after a Monday train derailment of freight cars containing hazardous chemicals will be shut out of their neighborhoods until at least late this afternoon, a Union Pacific spokesman said.

Crews had almost completed transfering combustible liquid to tanker trucks Wednesday afternoon, and a cracked tank car of chlorine was set to be emptied into another freight car by Wednesday night, officials said.

Residents with questions can visit the Union Pacific claim center at the Hilton San Bernardino, 285 E. Hospitality Lane, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Information: (909) 889-0125 or (909) 388-7938.
