Shameful Approval of LAUSD Contract
Re “Los Angeles Teachers OK Contract,” April 23: Having taught in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 15 years, I have never been as ashamed to be a member of UTLA as I am tonight. I am stunned that the contract was approved by the rank and file. UTLA leadership was voted out of office last month and replaced by a coalition calling for a 7% raise. The approved contract calls for a mere 2% raise.
With gas prices having skyrocketed in recent months, coupled with a 5% raise in my rent, the new contract is insulting to hardworking teachers. I am still wondering how teachers could elect leaders advocating rejection of the proposed agreement and then spinelessly succumbing to such a paltry offer. Do we have no professional or personal integrity?
