A car filled with teenagers plunged off an embankment and rolled over several times early Sunday, killing a 17-year-old girl and a male companion and leaving two others seriously injured.

Police blamed the crash on drinking.

The California Highway Patrol said the 1999 Acura was traveling northbound on Malibu Canyon Road just before 1 a.m. when it veered off the road and rolled down a 50-foot embankment.

The passengers in the rear seat -- a teenage girl from Arcadia and a male believed to be in his late teens -- died after being ejected from the vehicle. The 18-year-old driver and another passenger, 19, both from Van Nuys, suffered major injuries and were taken to UCLA Medical Center.

The CHP did not release the names of the dead or the two injured teenagers.

“The cause of this collision was determined to be alcohol-related,” CHP officials said in a statement.
