Comets Win on Swoopes’ Basket in Final Minute

Sheryl Swoopes hit a 12-foot jump shot with 23 seconds to play to give the Houston Comets a 62-61 victory over the Detroit Shock at Houston on Tuesday night.

Swoopes scored 17 points, and Michelle Snow had 15 points and two blocks for the Comets (15-10), who scored only 20 points in the second half. Tina Thompson finished with 10 points, and newly acquired Dawn Staley scored five points, all in the final minutes.

DeAnna Nolan scored 23 points for Detroit (10-13) and had a chance to win the game with less than two seconds left, but her jump shot glanced off the front of the rim.

Washington 65, Charlotte 63 -- Chasity Melvin had 17 points and seven rebounds at Washington to lead the Mystics over the Sting, losers of a franchise-record nine games in a row. The Mystics (13-12) completed a four-game season sweep of the Sting (3-21).

Sacramento 67, San Antonio 57 -- Yolanda Griffith had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and the Monarchs beat the Silver Stars at San Antonio. The Monarchs (18-7) lead the Western Conference. San Antonio (7-19) is last in the Western Conference.

Connecticut 72, New York 65 -- Taj McWilliams-Franklin had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Sun (19-6) over the Liberty (12-12) at New York. Connecticut, which leads the Eastern Conference, set a franchise record for wins.
