Inflation bites into bait costs

Share

OFFSHORE anglers will pay $30 for a scoop of anchovies or sardines in San Diego, a 50% increase and the first price hike in 14 years.

The new rate took effect last week just as the tuna season cranks up for one of the world’s busiest sportfishing fleets. Most anglers, however, were surprised the increase hadn’t happened sooner.

Buck Everingham, owner of Everingham Bros. Bait Co., says the increase is due to the rising cost of fuel, insurance and maintenance.

“We know we’re the last place anglers stop and we hate to raise our prices,” he says. “We’ve tried to hold our costs down as long as we could.”
