Tennessee Stops Texas

Shanna Zolman scored 23 points to help No. 2 Tennessee defeat No. 16 Texas, 102-61, Thursday night at Knoxville, Tenn., handing the Longhorns their sixth-worst loss.

It was only the fifth time a Texas opponent had scored over 100 points, the last time coming in 1999 in a 106-76 loss at Tennessee.

Candace Parker added 17 points and 14 rebounds for Tennessee (6-0). Nina Norman and Tiffany Jackson each scored 13 points to lead Texas (3-2).

Freshman Heather Claytor scored 14 points at Chapel Hill, N.C., and No. 7 North Carolina (6-0) won its sixth in a row with a 92-38 victory over Charleston Southern (1-5).... Barbara Turner had 14 points at Hartford, Conn., to lead No. 8 Connecticut (6-0) to a 72-47 victory over Hartford (4-1).... Jade Perry had 16 points at College Park, Md., and No. 9 Maryland (5-1) used a 66-point first half to cruise to a 118-59 victory over Appalachian State (1-3).... Candice Wiggins scored 16 points to lead No. 12 Stanford (4-1) to a 109-58 victory over Pacific (1-5) at Stockton.

Erin Lawless scored 16 points to lead No. 22 Purdue to a 98-65 victory over Western Michigan (0-4) at Kalamazoo, Mich.... LaToya Davis scored 24 points to help No. 24 Texas Tech (2-4) stop a three-game losing streak with a 63-53 victory over Sacramento State at Lubbock, Texas.... MEN’S TOP 25

Nick Fazekas scored 21 of his career-high 35 points in the second half and made a disputed block in the closing seconds, and No. 20 Nevada (4-0) held off Kansas’ second-half comeback for a 72-70 victory at Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks (2-3) had an opportunity to tie or win with 6.9 seconds left. C.J. Giles got the ball in the lane, but it was knocked away by Fazekas as he went to shoot. Kansas Coach Bill Self stormed onto the court, demanding a foul be called, but to no avail.

SOUTHLAND

Mike Efevberha scored 33 points in 28 minutes to lead five players in double figures in Cal State Northridge’s 117-55 non-conference victory over Hope, an NAIA school, at Northridge.

The point total is tied for third all-time for the Matadors (4-1) and is the highest since they got 117 points in December 2002 against Bethany, another NAIA school. Hope is 0-5.

Monty Scott and Norman Plummer each scored 13 points and Dayton (4-2) defeated Pepperdine, 63-45, at Dayton, Ohio.

After the Flyers built a 34-23 halftime lead, the Waves (1-3) pulled within 36-28 with 18:12 remaining, but never got closer.

Jarrad Henry led Pepperdine (1-3) with nine points and Chris Oakes added seven points and 13 rebounds.
