Prince to Coach Kansas State

Kansas State has hired Virginia offensive coordinator Ron Prince to replace Bill Snyder as head coach, Athletic Director Tim Weiser said Sunday.

Weiser said the school would formally announce the hiring today.

The 36-year-old Prince, raised about 20 miles from Manhattan, Kan., in Junction City, will become only the fourth black head football coach in Division I-A, joining UCLA’s Karl Dorrell, Washington’s Tyrone Willingham and Mississippi State’s Sylvester Croom.

A lineman at Dodge City Community College and Appalachian State, Prince spent five seasons at Virginia, the last three as offensive coordinator.

He also coached at Dodge City, Alabama A&M;, Cornell, South Carolina State and James Madison.

Coming off a second consecutive humiliating loss, Colorado Coach Gary Barnett said he still wanted a contract extension and planned on leading the Buffaloes in the Champs Sports Bowl.

Colt Brennan threw for 326 yards and five touchdowns as Hawaii put on an offensive show and defeated San Diego State, 49-38, late Saturday night at Honolulu in the season finale for the teams, each of which finished 5-7. Hawaii finished with 588 yards in total offense.
