Mike York scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:57 left, and the New York Islanders beat the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1, Sunday at Detroit.

York slammed in the rebound of Jason Blake’s shot from the bottom of the left circle for the winning goal. Alexei Yashin also scored for New York, which got 35 saves from Rick DiPietro, several in spectacular fashion.

“I grew up watching Detroit and watching some of the players on their team. I had a lot of family members and friends in the stands,” said York, a native of Waterford, Mich., a Detroit suburb, and a former standout at Michigan State. “It’s just great to score a goal and great to win.”

Mathieu Schneider scored for the Red Wings, who have lost two straight games -- both at home.

A little less than three minutes before York’s goal, Detroit goalie Jim Howard stopped Blake on a breakaway from off the right wing. Howard made 26 saves.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead on Schneider’s goal 4:21 in. His slap shot from the high slot beat DiPietro. New York tied it with 1:45 left in the first period when Yashin’s shot from the corner went in off Howard.

Vancouver 5, Boston 2 -- Brendan Morrison and Ryan Kesler scored 32 seconds apart to break open a close game in the third period and lift the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.

Daniel Sedin scored his second goal of the game on a power play with 1:47 left as the Canucks improved to 12-1 at home and retook the lead in the Northwest Division.

Buffalo 6, Colorado 4 -- Derek Roy pushed the puck past Peter Budaj with 2:27 left to lift the Sabres after the Avalanche had rallied from three goals down to tie the score at Denver.
