A suspected drunk driver who ran a red light and killed two men crossing a street in Stanton early Friday fled, but was chased down and detained by witnesses until authorities arrived, police said.
The men -- one in his 50s and the other in his 20s -- were crossing Beach Boulevard at Chapman Avenue in a marked crosswalk just after midnight when they were struck by a southbound Honda Civic, said Jon Fleischman, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The victims were tossed more than 100 feet by the impact, authorities said.
The driver, Jiyong Jung, 28 of Garden Grove, was booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
He is being held at the Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
He was not injured.
Jung fled, but was followed in separate cars by two witnesses, Fleischman said.
“They blocked him in so he couldn’t move his car, and in the meantime, they called 911,” he said.
The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their names weren’t released pending notification of relatives.
