Is Frommer’s aim off track on Amtrak?

ARTHUR Frommer should not blame the Bush administration [“Are Amtrak’s Days Numbered?” On a Budget, Dec. 11] for Amtrak’s problems. He should blame Amtrak for not reinventing itself.

Last year, I went to Tucson and found an airfare from Los Angeles for $116. This same trip on Amtrak.com was $189. The train took longer than driving.

Amtrak needs bullet trains and competitive prices with the airlines if it wishes to survive.

This has nothing to do with ideology; it’s only what the traveling public demands.

IN the last two years, I have had several wonderful train rides. We traveled through some of the most beautiful country in all the world.

The Amtrak staff could not have been more considerate and helpful. Even though there was track work that delayed the schedule, we got to our destination rested and unhassled.

The best part of our Amtrak experience was the cost. Coach fare is far less than gasoline would have cost. Even the extra cost of a compartment that includes meals is not unreasonable.

It is unthinkable for Congress to consider eliminating train service. Instead it should be looking to expand our nation’s rail service. I encourage others to check out Amtrak.
