Rutgers Extends Schiano’s Contract

Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano agreed to a seven-year contract extension on Thursday, only days before the Scarlet Knights play in their first bowl game in 27 seasons.

The deal will keep the Schiano, 39, at Rutgers through the 2012 season.

The former Miami assistant, who is in his fifth year at Rutgers, led the Scarlet Knights to a 7-4 record, their first winning record since 1992.

Rutgers finished third in the Big East Conference and will play in the Insight Bowl on Tuesday.

Schiano earned $191,000 in salary this year. Under the new deal, he will earn $250,000 in salary next year, increasing to $350,000 by 2012.

The contract also increases his guaranteed income from private sources from $325,000 this year to $625,000 next year and $750,000 by 2012.

Georgia receiver Sean Bailey will sit out the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 after injuring his right knee during practice.

Bailey injured the knee Tuesday night and was evaluated by the school’s sports medicine staff Wednesday. An MRI confirmed a torn ligament.

Reconstructive surgery is scheduled for January.

Offensive lineman Andree Tyree was suspended by Ohio State for violating team rules and will not play against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2.

No other details about the suspension were revealed.

Tyree, a senior, has played in 12 games in his career at Ohio State, including five this season.
