A Higher Standard

Share

In response to “Pentagon Files Reveal More Allegations of Abuse in Iraq” (Jan. 25), a reader asks, “Why must we be held to different standards?” (letter, Jan. 28).

We’ve seen examples of soldiers who have survived Iraq only to be killed by gang members here. Although not as intense, there is warfare in America fought daily by dedicated professionals. Police officers are very much “held to different standards.” When it even appears that they are not, we have riots such as those in 1992.

Quite simply, if we do not rise to a higher standard, we are recruiting tenfold the members of the insurgency in Iraq.
