Patsy Rowlands, 71; Actress in Popular ‘Carry On’ Comedies

Patsy Rowlands, 71, a British actress who appeared in the “Carry On” comedy films, died of breast cancer Jan. 22 in Hove, southern Britain, according to her agent, Simon Beresford.

She gained fame after appearing in nine films of the perennially popular series, including “Carry On Again, Doctor,” “Carry On Matron” and “Carry On at Your Convenience.”

Her film credits included the role of the landlady in the Roman Polanski film “Tess,” as well as roles in “Tom Jones” and “A Kind of Loving.”

Born in London, Rowlands won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and began her acting career at London’s Saville Theatre in “Valmouth.”

Other appearances included “Semi-Detached” with Laurence Olivier and “The Seagull,” directed by Lindsay Anderson. Her musical credits in London included Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.”
