That ‘70s Song Certainly Didn’t Keep Her Together

A San Clemente resident complained to police that neighbors across the street were “playing loud 1970s music on their stereo,” the Sun Post News’ crime log reported. “Reportedly, the subjects are playing Captain & Tennille’s ‘Love Will Keep Us Together’ and the [caller] states that she ‘will get depressed’ if they don’t turn it off.”

I know people who believe that repeated playing of 1970s music should be classified as a terrorist act.

The Queen Mary gone ashore? No, the rains didn’t loosen the big ship from its moorings, no matter how much some Long Beachites might wish for that to happen (see photo).

“It’s one of those inflatable things that you see for advertising, like the gorilla on the roof of a car dealership,” said Trent Sanders. “It was at a residence in Santa Barbara County. Must have been a heck of a party.”

Department of Redundancy Dept.: Driving through Albuquerque, Leonard Morpurgo of Tarzana noticed two signs that put the same thought in different words (see photo).

‘Fess up, me! Joan Hollingsworth of Laguna Niguel suspected this college catalog meant to say “investigating BY yourself” (see accompanying).

Everyone needs a role model: In his new autobiography, “I Feel Good,” soul singer James Brown admits that he was inspired by Gorgeous George (see photo), an L.A. wrestler of the 1940s and ‘50s known for his orchid velvet cape, his blond curls and his practice of having a valet spray perfume on him in the ring.

Brown said he was struck by the fact that GG knew all about “putting on a spectacle.” He especially liked the cape, which he adopted (though he claims that Gorgeous George stole the idea from Superman).

Role models (cont.): Boxer Muhammad Ali has said that he got the “I Am the Greatest” concept and the idea of razzing opponents after watching Gorgeous George rant his way through a TV interview.

And Bob Dylan, in his autobiography, “Chronicles: Volume One,” recalls the thrill he felt early in his career when Gorgeous George complimented his band. “It was all the recognition and encouragement I would need for years to come,” Dylan said. Bet you never knew that Gorgeous George was such a cultural force in America.

Undressed for the occasion: An inebriated young man, stripped down to his undies, was spotted in the area of a carwash, reported the Daily Nexus of UC Santa Barbara. Whether he intended to take a shower there isn’t known.

When sheriff’s deputies arrested him, he told them he’d lost his pants a few blocks back. They noticed, however, that he was carrying a pair of shorts. But, the deputies said, he told them he “never wears shorts.” Too informal, I guess.

miscelLAny: One of James Brown’s wives once claimed diplomatic immunity in a drug case on the grounds that her husband was “the ambassador of soul.”
