O’Neill Has a Shot, but It’s a Long One

Doug O’Neill, the leading trainer in Santa Anita’s winter-spring meet, will have starters in both graded stakes today.

However, it will be a big surprise if he wins the $200,000 La Canada Stakes and the $250,000 Las Virgenes.

Iflookscouldkill, a 4-year-old Wild Escapade filly owned by David Lanzman, will be the longest shot in the La Canada, a Grade II at 1 1/8 miles. Sharp Lisa, a 3-year-old Dixieland Band filly owned by a partnership that includes J. Paul Reddam, will be favored in the Las Virgenes, a Grade I at one mile.

In her Santa Anita debut in the seven-furlong Santa Ynez last month, Sharp Lisa won by 1 1/2 lengths.

Iflookscouldkill, who broke her maiden against $32,000 claimers June 18 at Hollywood Park, will be the pacesetter in the La Canada, but she has yet to run farther than 6 1/2 furlongs. A.P. Adventure is the 9-5 morning line favorite.

Race of the day: O’Neill and jockey Tyler Baze will combine in three 1 1/16 -mile Grade III stakes races at the New Orleans Fair Grounds today. Baze will ride Cee’s Irish in the $150,000 Silverbulletday, Skipaslew in the $100,000 Mineshaft, and Iced Out in the $150,000 Risen Star.

One for the road: Iron Rogue gets a trainer change to Michael Hushion in today’s seventh at Aqueduct and could spring a surprise in the $43,000 allowance at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Klamathfallsasleep and Lifestream in the fifth, Goodnews Bay, Mashiko and Only The Best in the sixth and High Byars, Dealinwithinsanity and Court Shenanigans in the seventh.
