2002 Ravenswood Big River Zinfandel, Alexander Valley

Share

Ravenswood’s longtime winemaker, Joel Peterson, has famously vowed never to make a wimpy wine, and he’s never wavered. The Sonoma estate specializes in Zinfandel, producing more than half a dozen single-vineyard bottlings. The grapes for Big River come from a vineyard in Alexander Valley first planted in the late 19th century.

What a beautiful Zin it made in 2002 -- rich, opulent and absolutely dry, with touches of blackberry, spice and vanilla. What really makes this wine soar is its impeccable balance. Soft, ripe tannins and a firm acidity mean it’s brilliant with food.

Break out Big River for some serious barbecue, for roasted birds and meats, for winter daubes or for a spring leg of lamb.
