From Times Wire Reports

A woman killed in an avalanche as she skied with 10 others last weekend was identified Monday as Gerilyn Marie Ewing, 45, of the Reno area.

Two other members of the experienced hiking party managed to escape the slide.

Ewing was skiing with her party when the avalanche occurred Sunday morning in steep terrain between the Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley ski resorts, authorities said.

Her boyfriend, Jerry Puryear, said everyone in the party had a transceiver, shovel and probe. He said he survived after his glove was spotted above the avalanche pack by another group member, Yale Spina, who dug him out after five minutes in the snow.
