Federer Overtakes Persistent Ferrero

Top-ranked Roger Federer saved two match points and beat Juan Carlos Ferrero, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6), Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Dubai Open in the United Arab Emirates.

Federer, who won his third straight match in a third-set tiebreaker, will face seventh-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Rainer Schuettler.

Third-seeded Tim Henman beat Igor Andreev, 7-6 (5), 6-1, and will face Ivan Ljubicic, who beat Fernando Verdasco, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (8).

Defending champion Vince Spadea advanced to the quarterfinals of the Tennis Channel Open, beating Janko Tipsarevic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He will next face James Blake, who ousted Jeff Salzenstein, 6-2, 6-4
