TiVo Inc., maker of digital video recorders, said it started shipping TiVoToGo, a service upgrade that allows some subscribers to view recorded programs on a computer or laptop.

Alviso, Calif.-based TiVo said the upgrade was free and would be available to customers who own the Series 2 version of its set-top box. TiVo first announced the service a year ago.

TiVo said the service was designed to respect copyrights. It said its desktop software for TiVoToGo supports only Microsoft Corp.’s Windows XP and 2000 operating systems.
