A Few More Wishes for the New Year

Re “Wishful Thinking” (editorial, Jan. 1): Here are some wishes for the new year that were missing on The Times’ wish list for the 2005. (1) The federal government will enforce our immigration and labor laws. (2) Brazen meddling in the internal affairs of the U.S. by Mexico will be met with a sharp rebuke by the U.S. government. (3) California will guarantee the integrity of the democratic process by requiring valid photo identification at the time of registration and voting. (4) Los Angeles will cease to be a sanctuary city for illegal aliens and rescind “Special Order 40.” (5) Driver’s licenses and public benefits will not be given to people who are not supposed to be in this country.

The Times misses no opportunity to bash Israel. Your editorial declared: “We wish that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s plan to dismantle settlements in Gaza would proceed on schedule and that it would lead to better ties to the Palestine leadership.” Why didn’t you ask that the Palestinian Liberation Organization and Arab countries do something to promote peace? It’s only Israel’s fault and responsibility, right?

I wish President Bush would start telling the truth about Iraq, approval of prisoner torture, environmental protection rollbacks, energy policy giveaways, tax cuts, the mushrooming federal deficit, erosion of civil liberties, the Social Security “crisis” ... about anything.
