Love regains full custody, lawyer says

Courtney Love, the rock star who spent much of 2004 dealing with criminal proceedings and unkind media coverage, has regained custody of Frances Bean Cobain, her 11-year-old daughter with the late Kurt Cobain, according to Love’s lawyer, Howard Weitzman.

The child’s custody was regained through a judge’s ruling Monday, Weitzman said. The singer was in daily contact with her daughter, but the return of full custody marks a victory for the singer, who in August told The Times that she had new stability and sobriety in her life.

In October 2003, Love was arrested at the home of Jim Barber, an ex-boyfriend and former manager, after an alleged break-in. She tested positive for cocaine and opiates. Hours after that incident, paramedics were called to Love’s house, and the rocker was treated for an apparent painkiller overdose. That incident led to the loss of her daughter.

Through her attorney, Love said Thursday: “Life is about choices, and I’ve chosen to move forward with my life in a healthy and positive way. I am looking forward to the future in continuing to create great music and entertainment. I really appreciate the encouragement and support I’ve received from my fans and the community.”
