Gordon L. Hough, 85; Led Pacific Telephone in 1970s, College Trustee

Gordon L. Hough, 85, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. during the 1970s, died Dec. 20 in Palm Desert of complications from a stroke, according to his daughter, Lowry Hough Ewig.

A native of Denver, Hough grew up in Glendora, Calif., and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University. He served in the Naval Reserve during World War II, retiring as a lieutenant commander.

In addition to his work with Pacific Telephone & Telegraph, where he was employed for more than 30 years in various management positions, Hough served on several corporate boards and was president of the Bay Area Crusade (now called United Way). He was a longtime trustee at USC and also served as a trustee at Pomona College and Harvey Mudd College. He retired from the phone company in 1980.
