Audit Finds Group Misspent Funds
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A development group misspent $36,155 intended for Chinatown neighborhood open-space improvements on junkets to China and other questionable expenditures, according to a draft audit report by the city controller’s office.
The city formed the Chinatown Economic Development Group in 1992 to undertake a $2-million recovery program after the Loma Prieta earthquake. The group now relies on private funding.
The audit was requested by the nonprofit group’s new board of directors.
