State, Regional Agencies Team Up on New Tunnel

State highway officials and two regional transportation agencies have signed an agreement to dig a new tunnel linking Oakland and Berkeley with eastern suburbs.
The partnership between Caltrans and officials in Alameda and Contra Costa counties was announced Thursday and is expected to speed construction of the tunnel.
The project will add a fourth bore to the Caldecott Tunnel on Highway 24, which serves about 175,000 drivers a day.
