The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Iraq and Kuwait:

Leonard W. Adams, 42, of Mooresville, N.C.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Adams died of noncombat-related injuries Monday at Camp Bucca, Iraq. He was assigned to the 105th Military Police Battalion, 18th Military Police Brigade, Army National Guard in Asheville, N.C.

Paul C. Alaniz, 32, of Corpus Christi, Texas; captain, Marine Corps. Alaniz was among 31 troops killed Wednesday when a military transport helicopter crashed in the desert near Rutbah, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, Calif.

Jonathan S. Beatty, 22, of Streator, Ill; corporal, Marine Corps. Beatty was killed Thursday in enemy action in Iraq’s Babil province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Brian D. Bland, 26, of Weston, Wyo.; staff sergeant, Marine Corps. Bland was among 31 troops killed Wednesday when a military transport helicopter crashed in the desert near Rutbah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Jonathan W. Bowling, 23, of Patrick, Va.; corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Bowling was among four Marines killed Wednesday when their armor-plated Humvee was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Lynchburg, Va.

Taylor J. Burk, 21, of Amarillo, Texas; specialist, Army. Burk was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device struck his vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Hood, Texas.

Kyle W. Childress, 29, of Terre Haute, Ind.; sergeant, Army. Childress died Jan. 21 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Duluiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Jonathan E. Etterling, 22, of Wheelersburg, Ohio; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Etterling was among 31 troops killed Wednesday when a military transport helicopter crashed in the desert near Rutbah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.

Karl R. Linn, 20, of Chesterfield, Va.; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Joe F. Lusk II, 25, of Reedley, Calif.; captain, Army. Lusk died of noncombat-related injuries Jan. 21 at Camp Buehring in Kuwait. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment at Ft. Bragg, N.C.
