Cesar Izturis’ extended run of misfortune reached a new low Tuesday when he learned he will be unable to play in the All-Star game because he is on the disabled list.

The move was made retroactive to June 30, making him eligible to return two days after the All-Star break. Izturis’ roster spot was taken by pitcher Odalis Perez, who came off the disabled list and pitched five innings.

“It’s the right thing to do for Cesar and it’s the right thing to do with the club,” Manager Jim Tracy said. “It’s not smart to take pitching away [at Coors Field].”

The Dodgers have 12 pitchers on their roster for the first time since June 24, when they dropped to 11 because quality starts were in abundance. However, only Jeff Weaver has turned in a quality start in the last four games.

Izturis said the hamstring felt slightly better after a light jog, but was informed he would be put on the disabled list.

“They talked to me,” he said. “I just want to get healthy and play again.”

Izturis made the All-Star team for the first time by winning the vote of players despite a month-long slide with the bat. His .275 batting average is 80 points lower than on June 1.

“He’s disappointed, but this won’t be the last time he makes the All-Star team,” pitcher Giovanni Carrara said.

“He’ll get many more chances.”

Izturis said he is hoping to attend the game “so I can be introduced and tip my cap.”

The strong play of Oscar Robles made the decision to put Izturis on the disabled list easier.

Robles went three for five Tuesday, giving him eight hits in two games, and is batting .339.

The battery of tests doctors employed to conclude that outfielder J.D. Drew will not require surgery on his left wrist included a CT scan, an MRI exam and stress X-rays.

His wrist was put in a short cast and will be evaluated in two weeks.

“It’s the best possible scenario,” Tracy said.

Outfielder Ricky Ledee is expected to be activated by the time the Dodgers open a series at Houston on Friday. He has been out since June 5 because of a strained hamstring.

“He is very close,” Tracy said. “To think along the lines of him playing nine innings, no. But to pinch-hit or be part of a double-switch, he’s very close.”

Left-hander Wilson Alvarez pitched one inning in a rehab assignment at triple-A Las Vegas, giving up one hit and striking out two.... The Dodgers signed right-handed pitcher Josh Wall, their second-round pick in the June first-year player draft. Wall was 14-1 with an 0.93 earned-run average at Central Private High in Walker, La. The Dodgers have signed 17 players from the draft, including 13 of their top 16.
