Mexico vs. Guatemala
Noon, Univision
Site -- Coliseum.
Update -- Both Mexico and Guatemala are coming off upset losses and losing this match could spell doom for that team’s hopes of advancing to quarterfinals. Mexico beat Guatemala, 2-0, in World Cup qualifying at Guatemala, and Mexico is a commanding 3-0-1 against Guatemala in Gold Cup play, holding a 6-2 edge in scoring. The last time Mexico gave up two goals in Gold Cup play was in a 2-1 overtime loss to Canada on Feb. 20, 2000, in San Diego. It was also the last time Mexico lost in the Gold Cup. Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz is coming off a hat trick against Jamaica, which led many to wonder if his team was relying too much on him.

South Africa vs. Jamaica
2 p.m., Galavision
Site -- Coliseum.
Update -- Upset victories have both nations riding high, perhaps the South Africans a little higher considering they are one of two invited guests for this region’s tournament and they beat tournament favorite Mexico with what amounts to a “B” team. South Africa impressed with its speed and dexterity with the ball and will need it again. And that’s just fine with Jamaica, which also relies on a speed game and scored a Gold Cup-record four goals against Guatemala. “That’s the great thing about soccer; you’ve got to play the game on the field, not on paper,” said Jamaica defender Tyrone Marshall.
