Duking it out over a young boxer’s story
Re “The Girl,” July 10-14
The Times’ decision to glorify aggression by running a five-part series on an 11-year-old girl’s entry into boxing is appalling.
Her quote, “I love how it feels,” referring to lashing out, striking a nose or a stomach, is sickening.
Fans who pay big money to see one opponent beat the other into unconsciousness are depraved. Every year boxers die from injuries in the ring. Boxing is barbaric.

I don’t find that the series “The Girl” rates all the space in the news section of the paper, especially with a picture of a then-10-year-old girl with the caption, “I like to hit people” (July 11). This is a feature story not worthy of all the space in the news section of the paper. The girl should be given therapy instead of acclaim.

I have never been so impressed with The Times as I am now. I had my coffee in hand ready to read my Sunday paper full of the normal current events: the London bombings, G-8, hurricane, terrorism, etc. What a surprise to see a beautiful little girl on the front page! I was very touched by the article about such a strong little girl. It isn’t often we are given such shinning examples of young girls “fighting” the odds. What a great choice the editors made in putting this on the front page.
