Cheviot Hills traffic congestion, solutions

Share

Re “ ‘Calmed’ ” Roads Led to a Storm,” July 20

As a resident of Palms, I am familiar with the traffic problem in Cheviot Hills, and I try to avoid the district whenever possible. Reading about the intractability of the situation only reaffirms to me that any proposed westward extension of the Metro Red Line -- whether above or below ground -- absolutely must serve Century City.

I also find it deliciously ironic that Cheviot Hills residents are complaining about traffic problems that stem from the lack of an efficient mass transit solution, given that a handful of them have used their connections to stall construction of the Exposition Boulevard light-rail line for decades.

This situation serves as a reminder that NIMBYism, no matter how artfully draped in environmental or “quality of life” concerns, is too often motivated by shortsighted greed.

Here is a radical idea for people who need to get from Century City to Cheviot Hills Recreation Center or from Cheviot Hills to the Century City Mall. Try walking or riding a bike. Traffic congestion will be relieved only when enough people use alternatives to cars.
