Quarterback Alex Smith, the first pick in the NFL draft in April, agreed to terms Monday on a six-year, $57-million contract with the San Francisco 49ers, a lawyer familiar with the deal told Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Smith, who is represented by Tom Condon, will receive a guaranteed $24 million and will get $4 million more guaranteed than Eli Manning, last year’s first pick overall, who received $20 million from the New York Giants. Manning also is represented by Condon.

Smith, who left Utah after his junior season, led the Utes to a 12-0 record last season. He passed for 2,624 yards and 28 touchdowns, and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

A university investigation into events before the killing of a former Arizona State player, allegedly by a teammate, found “errors in judgment” by Coach Dirk Koetter and then-athletic director Gene Smith but no violations of university policies or procedures.

The committee concluded that no faculty or staff members had any cause to believe Loren Wade, then an Arizona State player and now charged with the killing, was capable of shooting someone.

Wade was a sophomore running back when former player Brandon Falkner was shot to death outside a Scottsdale, Ariz., nightclub March 26. Wade, who played at Gardena Serra High, was arrested at the scene and is awaiting trial on a charge of first-degree murder.
