Public campaign financing would pay off

Re “City Considers Public Financing of Elections,” July 26

The savings to taxpayers in alleviating special-interest money and corruption through public financing of Los Angeles elections would not only offset the cost to taxpayers but would create enormous savings when city politicians are no longer encumbered by special-interest paybacks.

An added bonus would be that decision-making at City Hall would be free to focus on citizens’ needs and the best interests of the city rather than the coffers for the next election. Finally, a win-win opportunity for the citizens of Los Angeles. A model such as this would be a wonderful example for the rest of the state and country.
