They’ll Never Get Enough of Armstrong

Share

For a paper that can attach five reporters when Phil Jackson is named the Laker coach again, or do an in-depth piece about why the Dodgers hired a public relations firm, or devote its second page to an occasional comic, it boggles the mind that The Times sent only one reporter to France to cover the Tour de France.

Lance Armstrong’s seventh win was a better sports victory than Tiger getting another major. Why? With Lance, you have pure physical exertion, pure desire and grueling conditions. Tiger, although talented, is playing the best leisure sport we have. With Lance, you had seven “major” wins in a row. With Lance, you had the annual Olympics of a sport. With Lance, you had an athlete who was loved far more by many more than Tiger.

Bless Diane Pucin, but she is only one reporter. What was the Times thinking? Bill Plaschke was in Britain covering the British Open. Why didn’t he stay an extra week and cover a story that deserves his touch?

Lance Armstrong and his Discovery Team would never have won the seventh consecutive Tour de France without the six other years when Lance and his team were sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service.

Perhaps U.S. Postal should do a series of commemorative stamps.
