Massachusetts -- Halloween is an almost monthlong celebration in Salem, where the 24th annual Salem Haunted Happenings, Oct. 7 through 31, will include macabre monologues in historic sites, costume parades, lantern tours of the House of the Seven Gables and Salem Spirits of 1692 Trolley Tours. New York -- The 78th Feast of San Gennaro, Aug.12 and 13, is the oldest street fair in New York City. It will pay homage to the patron saint of Naples with three candlelight processions of the saint’s statue through the streets of Manhattan’s Little Italy. Many restaurants set up tables on closed streets and a few bring out strolling musicians. Adding to the fun will be a cannoli-eating contest and live entertainment. South Carolina -- The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Fall Candlelight Tour of Homes and Gardens, Sept. 22 through Oct. 29, is a rare opportunity for visitors to explore the rich architecture, design and landscaping of the historic city. This year’s self-guided tour areas will include King Street, with some of the oldest homes in the city, and the East Battery, where maritime merchants lived and enjoyed a sweeping view of the harbor. Tennessee -- The National Storytelling Festival will take place Oct. 7 through 9 in Jonesborough, a historic mountain town in northeastern Tennessee. The largest such event in the country draws master storytellers from every part of the U.S. The scary Ghost Story concerts will take place under the stars, while the Midnight Cabaret is strictly for grown-ups. Virginia -- The National Folk Festival in Richmond, Oct. 7 through 9, emphasizes Virginia but will also feature music, dances and crafts from all over the world: Piedmont blues, klezmer, mariachi, Puerto Rican, gospel, bluegrass and Cambodian dance.
