Sewage Causes Beach Closures

Some inland beaches in Long Beach will be closed until at least this evening following the accidental discharge of untreated sewage into the Los Cerritos channel Saturday.

Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Paul Rodriguez said the city would reopen the beaches after it was determined that bacteria levels in the water were safe.

The inland beaches -- in the Alamitos Bay and Marine Stadium areas near the mouth of the San Gabriel River -- may have been contaminated when about 2,500 gallons of sewage seeped through a manhole cover onto a residential street and then into a storm drain leading to the Los Cerritos channel, Rodriguez said.

The cause of the sewage discharge was not known, he said.
