Royals Put Sweeney on the DL

From Associated Press

The Kansas City Royals put first baseman Mike Sweeney on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained left wrist and elbow before Monday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Sweeney had a setback Sunday while taking practice swings and hitting off a tee, and received a cortisone shot.

The four-time All-Star had not played since Wednesday, when he was injured in a collision at first base with Jayson Werth of the Dodgers.

The Royals also put left-hander Jeremy Affeldt (strained left groin) and right-hander Ambiorix Burgos (strained rotator cuff) on the 15-day disabled list. The team called up left-hander Jimmy Gobble from triple-A Omaha and first baseman Justin Huber from double-A Wichita.

Boston starter Curt Schilling lobbied to speed up his rehabilitation after a simulated start.

Schilling threw 65 pitches and took some fielding practice, and had no problems with the right ankle that has kept him on the disabled list since April 24.

“I wasn’t thinking about the ankle when I was throwing. I was thinking about pitching,” Schilling said. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done that.”

The Cincinnati Reds put infielder Luis Lopez on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn right hamstring, an injury that could end his career.

The 34-year-old Lopez described the injury as being similar to one that ended Ken Griffey Jr.’s season last year, when he pulled the muscle from the bone.

To fill Lopez’s roster spot, the Reds recalled infielder William Bergolla from triple-A Louisville.
