No. 23 Wisconsin Wins at the Buzzer

Wisconsin scored only one basket over the final 9 1/2 minutes Tuesday night. That’s all the Badgers needed.

Alando Tucker’s putback at the buzzer allowed No. 23 Wisconsin to fend off Indiana, 62-60, at Madison, Wis.

The Badgers, 19-7 overall and 10-5 in the Big Ten, playing their third game in six nights, refused to use fatigue as an excuse for blowing a 10-point lead down the stretch -- when they missed nine of 10 shots from the field and six of 13 from the free-throw line.

But they were thrilled not to have to go to overtime.

“We definitely wanted to end it, we wanted to get it over,” Tucker said.

After a timeout with 10 seconds left, Tucker was short on a three-point shot and Mike Wilkinson grabbed the rebound but was too far underneath the basket for his follow shot to come close. No matter, Tucker swooped in, grabbed the rebound and put it back up in one motion before being swarmed by his teammates after the ball fell through the net at the buzzer.

It was Wisconsin’s first basket since a shot by Sharif Chambliss gave the Badgers a 53-43 lead with 9:35 remaining. Indiana is 14-12 and 9-6.

OTHER GAMES

Gary Ervin scored all four of his points in the final 1:08 to give Mississippi State (21-8, 9-6 Southeastern Conference) a 57-55 win over Arkansas (18-10, 6-9) at Fayetteville, Ark.... St. Joseph’s beat George Washington, 69-56, at Washington to win the Atlantic 10 regular-season championship. St. Joseph’s (16-10, 13-2) will be the No. 1-seeded team in the Atlantic 10 tournament. J.R. Pinnock scored 16 points for George Washington (18-7, 10-5).

Sharrod Ford made a dunk with 0.2 seconds left to give Clemson (15-13, 5-10 Atlantic Coast) a 66-64 victory over Virginia Tech (15-11, 7-8) at Clemson, S.C.... Ryan Gomes scored 23 points to lead Providence (13-16, 3-12 Big East) to an 86-75 victory over St. John’s (9-17, 3-12) at Providence, R.I.

WOMEN

No. 9 Rutgers (23-5, 14-2) won its first Big East Conference regular-season title outright with a 51-39 victory over Villanova (17-10, 10-6) at Villanova, Pa.... No. 10 Notre Dame (25-4, 13-3 Big East) overcame a school record-tying low point total for a road game in beating Seton Hall, 41-35, at South Orange, N.J. Seton Hall is 14-13 and 6-10.... Ann Strother scored 19 points for No. 14 Connecticut (20-7, 13-3 Big East) in a 71-41 victory over West Virginia (16-11, 7-9) at Morgantown, W.Va.... Mary Fox and Katie Robinette scored 18 points apiece as No. 20 Iowa State (22-5, 12-4) held on for a 61-52 victory over Kansas (12-15, 5-11) at Ames, Iowa.... Kathrin Ress scored 22 points to lead No. 22 Boston College (19-8, 10-6 Big East) to a 64-55 victory over St. John’s (18-9, 7-9) at New York.
