Stricken Woman Made Honorary Firefighter
A terminally ill young woman who long dreamed of joining the Los Angeles Fire Department was made an honorary firefighter Saturday in a surprise ceremony at her Highland Park home.
The Fire Department presented Leticia Reyes, 23, with a brush coat embroidered with her name and a certificate proclaiming her an honorary firefighter, said department spokeswoman Melissa Kelley.
About 100 people, including 15 firefighters, attended the ceremony.
Reyes was taking community college courses to help her pursue her dream career when she was diagnosed with cancer.
