France: chateau living
Chateau de Roussan, 13210 Saint-Remy-de-Provence; 011-33-490-92-1163, www.chateau-de-roussan.com. “My wife, Kris, and I spent four very restful and quiet days at the chateau. It’s about a mile and a half from Saint Remy, an ideal location for touring Provence. We stayed in the Nostradamus room (in the 16th century, Nostradamus owned the land), and it was wonderful -- large and clean, with a great view of the tree-lined drive. It was easy to imagine Nostradamus living there.” Doubles from $79.

You might think you were in a small town in Marin County. The cafe offers [Berkeley restaurant] Chez Panisse-level cooking, country ambience, friendly people, casual dress and the sense that people here are forged by eight months of winter.” Lunches under $10. Dinner entrees $13-$28.
