CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Museum of Art will close for the first six months of next year as part of a six-year, $258-million expansion and renovation.
Permanent collection galleries will close by June and the entire museum will shut down from January to June 2006. The trustees voted unanimously Monday to proceed with the project.
The museum has raised $116 million, surpassing the $100-million benchmark that trustees wanted before continuing. The initial fundraising phase includes 29 gifts of $1 million or more.
Groundbreaking will be held in September. The project will include additional galleries, special exhibit areas, offices and parking.
Increased steel and cement prices have raised the cost from the original estimate of $225 million.
