An Oxnard man was found guilty of first-degree murder Friday in the death of a rival gang member, authorities said.

Jose Luis Navarro Garcia, 22, was convicted of shooting Davey Marceleno, 23, of Oxnard at Marceleno’s apartment in 2003.

The jury also found Garcia guilty of special allegations that he killed Marceleno by ambush and to promote a street gang, Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Maeve Fox said. Prosecutors said Garcia was a member of the Sur Town Chiques, rivals of the Oxnard Colonia Chiques, of which Marceleno was a member.

Garcia and two fellow gang members drove to Marceleno’s residence in the 500 block of Hill Street on the night of Feb. 7, 2003. Garcia approached Marceleno’s apartment on foot with a shotgun and knocked on the door, authorities said. When Marceleno came to answer it, Garcia fired several rounds through the door, hitting Marceleno in the abdomen and killing him, authorities said.

Garcia is scheduled to be sentenced on April 13 in Ventura County Superior Court.
