Part of Historic City Water Line Dug Up
Workers preparing a 32-acre field near downtown Los Angeles for a planned $2-million corn-growing art installation have unexpectedly dug up a section of the Zanja Madre, the brick-lined “mother ditch” that provided water to the city from 1781 to 1904.
The discovery prompted leaders of the Center for Law in the Public Interest on Tuesday to demand an immediate halt to all work “that may jeopardize” the pipeline. They said city and Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials would meet today to discuss the discovery.
