John Michael O’Hare, 82; Broadway Actor Known for ‘Mame’ Role

John Michael O’Hare, 82, Broadway actor remembered for his long run in “Auntie Mame” opposite Rosalind Russell, Beatrice Lillie and Greer Garson, died April 20 at his home in Pacific Palisades. The cause was heart failure.

A native of La Junta, Colo., O’Hare studied drama at the University of Colorado and Washington University. He interrupted his nascent acting career to serve as a bombardier in the Army Air Forces during World War II.

O’Hare made his Broadway debut in 1949 in “The Enchanted,” and later appeared in such plays as “The Pink Elephant” with Steve Allen and “The Bad Seed.”

He eventually turned to writing plays, including “Once Over Nightly,” which ran for two years at San Francisco’s On Broadway Theatre, and “Once Again With You,” which was performed at Los Angeles’ Main Stage Theatre.
