Monica Zetterlund, 67; Swedish Jazz Singer and Film, TV, Stage Actress

Monica Zetterlund, 67, a jazz singer who was one of Sweden’s best-known artists, died Thursday in an apartment fire in Stockholm.

Praised at home for singing jazz in Swedish, she received international acclaim in 1960 after touring the U.S. She later recorded with saxophonist Zoot Sims and trumpet player Thad Jones, but is best-known for her 1964 recording with pianist Bill Evans, “Waltz for Debby.”

She also starred in more than a dozen Swedish movies, TV series and stage plays, including the film adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s books “The Emigrants” and “The New Land.”

She had scoliosis, a disabling disease that twists the spine. During the last years of her career, she often had to be helped on stage and sang sitting down.
