Perfection Is on the Line

Two unbeaten 3-year-olds will get together in today’s second race at Hollywood Park.

Appearance Fee, who has won both of his starts for Bob Baffert -- he trains the gelding for his wife Jill -- will take on Legal Precedent, an impressive winner in his debut on April 22, in the $51,000 allowance at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

A son of Fly So Free, Appearance Fee beat $32,000 maidens by 1 1/4 lengths in his first start on March 30 at Santa Anita, then returned less than three weeks later to stretch out and win by three-quarters of a length in his first race on grass. Tyler Baze, who has been aboard for both of the victories, has the ride.

Legal Precedent, a son of Theatrical, won by two lengths at today’s distance and it’s never easy for a first-time starter to win around two turns. Trained by Ben Cecil for owner John Moore, Legal Precedent will try to remain perfect under jockey Alex Solis.

The field of six is completed by Bahamian Magic, a beaten favorite going 5 1/2 furlongs in his Hollywood Park debut on April 29; Chant For Gold, Donnybrook Pride and Keg Tap, who makes his first start in California for trainer Mike Mitchell after being claimed for $62,500 out of a maiden win at Gulfstream Park on March 11.

Race of the day: Be Wild Again, a New York-bred who has won three of five, is among 11 3-year-olds scheduled to run in the $60,000 Lite The Fuse today at Belmont Park. Norberto Arroyo Jr. will ride Be Wild Again, a son of Tomorrows Cat, in the six-furlong race.

One for the road: Hutchison Station has won two in a row by a combined 11 lengths and steps up in class for sharp trainer Greg Foley in today’s fifth at Churchill Downs. Rafael Bejarano will ride the 5-year-old Slew City Slew horse in the $30,000 claimer at six furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Strut Your Stuff in the sixth, Royal Stamp, Fourty Niners Son and the Licari entry in the seventh and Boulevard Quean, Kachina River and Rivermaid in the eighth.
