From Times Staff and Wire Reports

CSKA Moscow overcame an early deficit and a partisan Portuguese crowd with three second-half goals to defeat Sporting Lisbon, 3-1, and win soccer’s UEFA Cup on Wednesday in Lisbon.

The result made CSKA the first Russian club to win a European title and Sporting one of only three teams to lose a European final at their own ground, joining Juventus and AS Roma.

Daniel Carvalho, who set up all three goals, was named man of the match.

“We knew Sporting would start strong in front of their own fans, so for the first 20 minutes we had to be careful and defensive to slow them down,” Coach Valery Gazzayev said. “In the second half, we had to correct our midfield and we became more offensive.”
