Win Streak at Nine for Red Wings

Despite missing their top defenseman and then losing their starting goalie, the Detroit Red Wings found a way to get their longest winning streak in nearly 10 years.

Chris Osgood made 23 saves after replacing the injured Manny Legace, and the Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-1, Tuesday night at Detroit for their ninth victory in a row.

Detroit has its longest winning streak since 1995-96, when it had two nine-game streaks.

Detroit was without defenseman Mathieu Schneider, a last-minute scratch because of a sore groin, and then Legace left the game because of a slight knee sprain with 3:23 remaining in the first period after Chicago’s Matthew Barnaby fell on him. Legace was expected to undergo precautionary X-rays today.

Pittsburgh 4, New Jersey 3 -- Sergei Gonchar scored 1:01 into overtime at East Rutherford, N.J., for the Penguins’ second victory of the season. The overtime period was the sixth for the Penguins in 12 games. They had lost all five previous times.

Atlanta 6, Tampa Bay 4 -- Jaroslav Modry scored two of Atlanta’s four power-play goals at Tampa, Fla. Atlanta converted on all of its man-advantage situations against the NHL’s top penalty-killing unit. The Lightning had given up only three goals in 62 short-handed situations before the game.

New York Islanders 4, Boston 3 -- Shawn Bates scored with 28.2 seconds left in overtime, and the Islanders recovered from two blown leads at Uniondale, N.Y.

Calgary 3, Minnesota 0 -- Jarome Iginla scored twice, and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots at Calgary, Canada, for his second shutout of the season.

Edmonton 5, Columbus 1 -- Ales Hemsky scored twice at Edmonton, Canada, and the Oilers won their third game in a row.

Todd Harvey, Ryan Smyth and Raffi Torres also scored for Edmonton, and defenseman Chris Pronger added two assists.

Montreal 5, Florida 4 -- Michael Ryder scored his second overtime goal of the season on a power play at Montreal.

Vancouver forward Matt Cooke broke his jaw in practice and will be sidelined indefinitely.
