Derby lovers gather tonight

to pass the hat

If they could save the Formosa Cafe, they can save the Derby. Like the Formosa, a venerable Santa Monica Boulevard bar whose demise looked imminent at the hands of developers in 1991, the Derby is now the latest goose at the chopping block (pour one out for Yee Mee Loo and Al’s Bar). The Los Feliz nightclub is inviting friends to tonight’s town hall meeting at 2071 Dracena St., just a few blocks from the venue. Current development plans call for a condo/retail space at the Derby, which was built in 1928 and is the last original Brown Derby. For info: savethederby.com.

Celebrity poker showdown

James Woods and Vince Van Patten were scheduled to take over the Montmartre Lounge in Hollywood Wednesday night for the one-year birthday party of their website, HollywoodPoker.com.... Kelly Osbourne celebrates her 21st birthday with a joint party with Agent Provocateur, a swanky lingerie line that is toasting the first anniversary of its Vegas locale. The party is at Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel in Sin City this Saturday, with DJ Splyce scheduled to rock the house.... Leonardo Di Caprio checked out the Rolling Stones at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday and Mick Jagger checked out the women of Forty Deuce on Saturday.... Bowery owner George Abou-Daoud, a New York transplant, says he was so serious about bringing L.A. a taste of New York he hired chef David Bonfiglio (Savoy, Triomph, Paramount) to helm his new spot at Vine and Sunset. We hear actor David Schwimmer’s a big Bowery fan.... And jet-setting Schwimmer is also a fan of a new New York bar, the Double Seven, located in the heart of the meatpacking district. The tiny spot was designed by L.A.’s Dodd Mitchell.... Actor Udo Kier hangs at the Blue Star, a downtown cafe that bakes everything from scratch.

Quite a knack for fundraising

Former Runaways singer Cherie Currie is hosting “Free Aid,” a fundraiser for the Free Clinic of Simi Valley, at the Key Club in WeHo on Saturday with performances by the Knack, Linda Perry, Martha Davis and more.... West Coast Choppers domo Jesse James hosts his annual “No Love” party, a public bash at his Long Beach shop that raises money for LBC youth programs. This year’s event on Saturday includes a performance by the L.A. Derby Dolls.
