California Speedway to Build Area for Families
California Speedway plans to spend more than $10 million to create a family-friendly entertainment area with a Wolfgang Puck-designed restaurant, concert area and additional shade structures to help shelter fans who arrive early on race days.
Daytona Beach-based International Speedway Corp., which owns the two-mile, D-shaped oval track in Fontana, will unveil the plans at a news conference today.
The 23.8-acre midway will incorporate the 12 acres that now serve as the front door for the motor sports complex, built 10 years ago by racing industry veteran Roger Penske for $120 million.
Track officials described the project as the next step in NASCAR’s ongoing push to gain fans in the nation’s second-largest media market. It comes two years after NASCAR shifted a second Nextel Cup race to the track.
The project also would improve traffic flow into and out of the track’s 32,000 parking spaces as well as Metrolink commuter train service to races.
