Texas’ Aldridge Stands in Way of West Virginia

LaMarcus Aldridge made a putback with 3.6 seconds left and blocked a last-second shot to lift No. 2-ranked Texas to a 76-75 men’s basketball victory over No. 13 West Virginia on Monday night in the semifinals of the Guardians Classic at Kansas City, Mo.

Daniel Gibson made six three-point shots and scored 20 points to lead Texas (3-0).

Aldridge’s block came on a last-second layup attempt by Mike Gansey, who led the Mountaineers (2-1) with 28 points.

No. 3 Connecticut 77, Arkansas 68 -- Rudy Gay scored a career-high 28 points and the Huskies (2-0) overcame turnover problems to beat the Razorbacks (1-1) in the first round of the EA Sports Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

No. 12 Michigan State 89, Chaminade 67 -- Maurice Ager scored 23 points to lead the Spartans over Silverswords in the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

The Spartans (1-1) weren’t bothered by leg cramps against Chaminade (0-1) as they were in an opening-game loss to Hawaii. Shannon Brown finished with 18 points and five steals against Chaminade.

No. 8 Gonzaga 88, No. 23 Maryland 76 -- The Bulldogs’ “Big Three” took care of the offense and the team’s zone took care of the defense in their victory over the Terrapins (1-1) at Lahaina.

Adam Morrison scored 25 points, Derek Raivio had 24 and J.P. Batista 21 for Gonzaga (2-0), which will play Michigan State today in the semifinals.

No. 20 Indiana 100, Florida A&M; 63 -- Marshall Strickland scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half, and Roderick Wilmont added 17 to help the Hoosiers (2-0) rout the Rattlers (1-1) at Bloomington, Ind.

No. 24 Wake Forest 79, North Carolina Asheville 63 -- Justin Gray paced a balanced offense with 16 points to lead the Demon Deacons (4-1) over the Bulldogs (0-2) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

No. 18 Iowa 67, No. 7 Kentucky 63 -- Greg Brunner had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and the Hawkeyes (3-0) made a flurry of clutch defensive plays and free throws to beat the Wildcats (2-1) in the semifinals of the Guardians Classic.

No. 9 Arizona 61, Kansas 49 -- Despite nearly wasting a 16-point lead and shooting 28.3% (17 for 60), the Wildcats (1-0) beat the Jayhawks (1-1) to advance to today’s semifinals at Lahaina.

SOUTHLAND MEN

Montana 81, Loyola Marymount 75 -- The host Lions (1-1) shot only 38% in their loss to the Grizzlies (1-1). Brandon Worthy’s 26 points led Loyola.

Cal 88, Long Beach State 69 -- Coach Ben Braun got his 500th win in the Bears’ victory over the 49ers (0-2) at Berkeley.

UC Santa Barbara 67, San Diego 65 -- Alex Harris and Cecil Brown each scored 14 points and delivered pivotal shots to lead the Gauchos (2-0) over the Toreros (1-1) at Santa Barbara.

WOMEN

In selected top 25 games:

No. 2 Tennessee 92, Chattanooga 50 -- Shanna Zolman scored 20 points and Candace Parker added 14 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Vols (2-0) over the Mocs (1-2) at Knoxville, Tenn.

No. 4 Ohio State 85, Eastern Kentucky 38 -- Jessica Davenport had 24 points and 14 rebounds to carry the Buckeyes (1-0) over the Colonels (0-2) at Columbus, Ohio.
